Save Money on Las Vegas Hotels by Using Points for Memorial Day Weekend

Quick View:

Las Vegas can be a fun place to spend a holiday weekend (or any weekend). The tradeoff is that room rates can quickly rise for these weekends. I was able to save over $500 for a room by using points. With Hilton Honors, booking rooms using award nights or points means you also don’t have to pay taxes or resort fees. With Hilton Diamond status, I will also be getting a credit of $25 per person per room (up to $50/day) for food or drinks. This means that for Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas, a 2-bed room at the Hilton Conrad at Resorts World costs just 80,000 Hilton points instead of over $500. This is even more beneficial with 3 or 4 people per room, as the money room rate increases, but the points needed stays at just 80,000.

If you want to read the full breakdown, see below. Or check out the key points TLDR section at the bottom.

Las Vegas can be quite pricey, especially during a holiday weekend. Looking at this Memorial Day weekend, for example, Saturday night (5/27/23) on the strip is going for more than $400/night for a 5-star hotel. That is, if the hotel isn’t already sold out. And that’s just the price for 2 travelers and does not include the resort fees or taxes. This means if you want to stay at a higher-end hotel you will end up paying $500 or more for a single night. The price goes even higher when looking at rooms for a group of 3 or 4 people. This is where using points come in handy and can save you a lot of money.

This is because the points allow you to book the room (and not have to worry about taxes and fees either). The Conrad Las Vegas at Resorts World is still letting you book using points, which is great news if you have Hilton points. Hilton points are generally valued at or below 0.5 cents per point, meaning that an 80,000 point room would be a good value if the hotel was at or above $400/night (80,000 points/$400 = 0.5 cents per point). In the case of Saturday to Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend, the price is $585 for 4 people vs 80,000 points for the same room. The result is you are able to get a value of 0.73 cents per point, which is a solid redemption for Hilton points.

The same room for the same night but booking by using points.

TLDR highlights:

  • Holiday weekends mean higher room rates

  • Point cost for hotels don’t necessarily change the way cash prices do

  • Using points to book the rooms on these holiday weekends can save you a lot of money

  • You can also save on resort fees and taxes by using points (with Hilton)

  • It is still possible to book a $600/night room by using Hilton points for Las Vegas on Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend
